Sinking of the USS Cairo

On 12 December 1862, a Confederate demijohn torpedo (mine) placed by Zere McDaniel and his fellow torpedo operators, sank the iron-clad river gunboat Cairo in the Yazoo River. Her wreck was recovered in 1965, but was badly damaged during the salvage efforts. The gunboat and its artifacts can now be seen at the USS Cairo Museum, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
